New Study Spotlight
When delivering our education workshops, our mission has always been to unlock the unique potential of every single learner who walks through the door of education. But to help a student achieve their potential, we first have to truly see them and understand the unique challenges they may face.
Recently, Deborah delivered a CPD session to Inclusion teams and tutoring staff at Blackpool & the Fylde College. The session focused on identifying missed SEND in forces children, delivered as a core part of our Achieve Your Potential project. Our training focused on how Colleges can better identify, understand, and support students from Armed Forces families.
When we talk about "military connected students," we are referring to learners who are the children of currently serving personnel, veterans, or reservists. While these students often possess incredible resilience, adaptability, and maturity, they also face distinct challenges that can quietly disrupt their education.
From the emotional strain of parental deployment and frequent family relocations to the unique transition hurdles faced by veteran families adjusting to civilian life, these students carry a unique set of circumstances. Because these challenges aren't always visible on the surface, these learners can easily slip under the radar.
Delivering CPD sessions to educators is critical. By training our tutors and Inclusion specialists to actively identify these students early on, we can ensure they never have to navigate their educational journey unsupported.
Through the Achieve Your Potential project, educators can shift from a reactive support model to a proactive one. Training staff to identify military connections allows colleges to foster a culture of belonging. Simply acknowledging a student’s background and validating their unique lifestyle can dramatically boost their confidence and sense of security.
By bringing Inclusion teams and tutoring staff together for this type of training, ensures a unified approach. Tutors who see students on a daily basis are perfectly positioned to spot the indicators and start the conversation. Inclusion teams can stand ready with the specialist frameworks to deliver the structured support required.
When these two vital teams speak the same language and share the same objective, the support system becomes seamless.
At Careers Ideas Ltd we have a deep connection to the Armed Forces. As Silver Covenant holders, it is our duty to uphold the principles of the Armed Forces Covenant ensuring that those who serve, or have served, and their families are treated with fairness and respect.
Through targeted CPD we can leave a lasting legacy far beyond the Achieve Your Potential project. We are actively equipping all academic staff with the empathy, insight, and practical tools needed to ensure our military connected students don't just get by, but truly thrive, achieve their qualifications, and step confidently into their future careers.
