Inspiring the Next Generation: Delivering a Careers Session to Our Local Cadets

There is something incredibly rewarding about stepping outside the day-to-day routine of the office and into a room full of young people eager to figure out their next steps. Recently, I had the privilege of doing exactly that, delivering an evening career session to our local cadet units.

Breaking Down the "Real World"

When you’re a teenager, the working world can feel like a bit of a black box. It’s easy to look at a job title and have no real concept of what that person actually does between 9am and 5pm or what hybrid working means.

My goal for the session wasn't to give a dry, corporate PowerPoint presentation. Instead, I wanted to pull back the curtain on the business industry and show them what a career path really looks like, twists, turns, and mistakes included.

The best part of the night was easily the practical problem solving session. You can always judge the success of a session by the questions that come out of it, and these cadets did not disappoint. They asked about everything from what I wanted to be when I was their age to jobs that will exist in the future.

Why Community Investment Matters

As a business, it’s easy to get hyper focused on our immediate goals, projects, and clients. But we don't exist in a vacuum. Investing time into our local community especially into groups like the cadets, who are already dedicating their spare time to self improvement is one of the most impactful things we can do.

These young people are the future workforce, the future innovators, and the future leaders. If a two hour session can help even one cadet feel a bit more confident about their career path, it’s time incredibly well spent.

A huge thank you Flt Lt Allan Rennie, the wider Cadet staff and the cadets themselves for welcoming me so warmly. I have a feeling our future is in very safe hands!
