This week I had the pleasure of attending the North West Regional Defence and Security Cluster (NWRDSC) International Women’s Day celebration, an event that brought together professionals from across the defence, security, education, and business communities. The event was not only a celebration of women’s achievements but also a reminder of the importance of creating inclusive environments where diverse voices are welcomed, heard, and valued.
International Women’s Day offers an opportunity to reflect on progress while recognising that there is still much work to be done to achieve true equality. Events like this create space for meaningful conversations about representation, opportunity, and the role organisations must play in supporting women across all sectors, including those that have historically been male dominated.
What stood out most during the event was the strength of collaboration across industries. From defence and aerospace to education and community organisations, there was a shared commitment to improving access, supporting career pathways, and encouraging the next generation of women to see themselves in roles where they may previously have felt under represented.
Diversity is not simply about fairness or representation it is essential for innovation and effective problem solving. When organisations bring together people from different backgrounds, experiences, and perspectives, they gain a broader range of ideas and insights. This diversity of thought leads to stronger decision making and more creative solutions to complex challenges.
In sectors such as defence and security, where innovation, resilience, and adaptability are critical, diversity becomes a strategic advantage. Encouraging more women to pursue careers in these fields helps strengthen the talent pipeline and ensures that the workforce better reflects the communities it serves.
The conversations, insights, and connections made during the event were both inspiring and encouraging. They highlighted how collective action across education, industry, and community organisations can drive positive change.
International Women’s Day is a moment to celebrate achievements, but it is also a call to action. By continuing to champion diversity, support inclusive workplaces, and encourage new talent into our industries, we can help build stronger, more innovative, and more equitable organisations for the future.

For some time, I've been pondering on setting up a podcast, to support service personnel transition successfully to civvy street. As Bronze holders of the Employer Recognition Scheme, I wanted Careers Ideas Ltd to do something more than what we do already to support transitioning service members and their families.
